Nestled in the village of Roke is Home Sweet Home, the kind of country pub that is worth an excursion out of Oxford for. In the local area, this pub has gained a reputation for a welcoming atmosphere married with fabulous food. So Daily Info felt it was the perfect place to go for a spot of supper.

On arrival we were welcomed by four adorable dogs of various sizes and a roaring open fire, a very good way to start our first meal at this establishment. We were shown to our table, with our chairs being constructed from former barrels, a charming touch. The menu was packed with great meals, including braised beef cheek, mussels in cider cream and a Thai green vegetable curry. It feels like Home Sweet Home offers patrons exactly what they might be looking for, which in my case was pork belly, whilst for my partner it was a salmon fillet. Food ordered, we could relax, able to enjoy the easy atmosphere of pub that at times felt like it had been ripped from a Richard Curtis film.

The pace at Home Sweet Home is somewhat leisurely but this just adds to the overall enticing atmosphere. When our food arrived we could tell we had made the right choice. There was plenty of pork belly with the meat cooked to perfection. The accompanying vegetables were appetising, whilst the roast potatoes were contenders for some the best examples I'd had in a restaurant. My partner's salmon was cooked well, proving moist and flaky. The capers were a great addition, in a tangy and delicious sauce.

Duly stuffed by our mains, we turned down the opportunity for a dessert, despite the tempting options of a chocolate brownie with a raspberry sorbet or an apple and blackberry crumble, accompanied with honey and ginger. Certainly the food alone is worth a second visit to Home Sweet Home. Add this to the charming atmosphere and exceptional staff and it felt a shame to finish our meal at this pub. It really is one of the best pubs surrounding Oxford and we heartily recommend a visit (maybe accompanied with an afternoon stroll round the area). The pub is dog- and child-friendly and feels geared to accommodate whoever walks through its door.
