You like all Americans expect movie to have an instant entertainment impact with action, sex or a wild slapstick romance!
Unfortunately, most Americans judge movies according to the same standards of high expectations, or high entertainment value.
The movie has the classic style of Alfred Hitchcock and Chinese cinema with the focus on the characters not being entertaining, but real. How the main character reacts to them weaves the story. However, the main character was not an actress: therefore, she struggled to get over her nerves. If you compared the story to other romantic stories like "Love Story", or "Dr Zhirago", then you never gave the movie a chance. It is suppose to a whimical, edgy and cute romance of an innocent young woman's first heart break not an epic romance.
The director has a spontaneous, creative and romantic perspective toward his films that is more subtle than most people have the patience to notice, or observe. His master piece is "In the Mood for Love". This was just his first attempt with an English-American audience who just look at movies through their typical belief of what they think movies should be. Instead of appreciating artistic textures in movies, the critics analyze everything to death until the movie becomes a stink bomb in their opinion.
I think if you really give this one a second chance; you maybe surprised by its cool aura.
