Upon arrival I knew exactly what I was going to have. One of the great meal choices available at Red Star is a Bento box (combing main, side and soup). With various Bento Boxes (including Teriyaki chicken, plum duck suace, and salmon unagi) on offer I went for a particular favourite of mine; chicken Katsu curry. This box contains rice, chicken katsu, and three gyoza (dumplings). In addition to this I had a side of Ebi Katsu, prawns covered in breadcrumbs. My fellow diner was somewhat overwhelmed by the choice (which impressed her) and after several minutes of pondering went for shredded pork crispy noodles and a side of vegetable spring rolls (is there a more classic side for noodles?)
Order placed, after the staff had given us plenty of time, seeming to know exactly when my sister had made up her mind, we were given just enough time to update each other on our lives (she: single, working with carnivores at a wildlife park; me: married, rambunctious daughter) before our food arrived, delightfully warm. The shredded pork was an enticing meal, a plentiful treat with the noodles cooked just right. The spring rolls were crispy and packed with filling, proving a fine complement to the main. The Bento box was outstanding, and I stand that the Katsu curry at Red Star is one of the best in
As well as great food, Red Star is wonderfully speedy without being brisk or rushed, and the food comes out quickly without losing its freshness. We were fed and out the door in under an hour. It was the perfect restaurant to show my visiting sister how good the food is in
For two drinks, two sides and two mains the meal cost £27.20.
